Train your parrot to come to you, in just two steps Does your pet refuse to come near you? Does he detest and resist any sort of petting or touching on your part? Well, the solution is here; in just about five steps we will tell you how you can make your pet come to you in no time at all. We will give you the basics here and the details can be found in our parrot training newsletter. Step one The basic step in any parrot recalling training is that you have to gain the trust of your pet; patience is the bottom line. Be patient with your pet and feed him from your hand. Initially, it is a bad idea to want to touch him so just let him peck his food from you hand. This does not mean that you keep your hand anywhere and he comes to you. Offer food from your hand and not off your hand. Do this for a few days and you will see that he will move towards your hand if you move your hand away. Thus, some level of trust has been developed. Now start touching your parrot till the time they resist. Start with touching their feet and then move upwards. This process will take sometime as they will not allow you to touch their head on the very first day. You have to gradually build it up so that they allow you to touch them wherever you want. This shows that you have complete trust. Step two Get your bird out of its cage. Parrots take training positively only when they are out of their cages and out in the open. You have to teach them to reach for things and a clicker is perhaps the best way it can be done. When you are recall training your parrot then it is important that initially you keep lots of treats with you. When you want your parrot to do something and it does that then click and reward. It is best to click after say ten seconds of the deed completion and then reward. If you train them like this for a few minutes everyday then they will automatically learn what the treat is for and they will do it whether you give them the treat or not. Continue in this vein for a few more days, every time increasing the distance and decreasing the rate of the treats. What will happen is your bird will automatically come to you in the hope of getting a treat and that is the trick. If your bird can fly then just the sound of food or your call is enough to bring them swishing on your hand but remember to click after they do the desired act and not before. It is very important that that get to know exactly which action of theirs has called for the treat.
