How to stop your parrot from biting you

When you buy a pet from the pet shop or someone gifts you one, you and your pet both do not know each other properly. As such there is a tendency on the part of the pet to think of you as an enemy and an outsider who is a possible threat to them. This can only be changed with constant attention and bridging the gap by gaining each others trust. Parrot biting is one such problem that requires acquaintance to stop. There are a few basic things that you have to keep in mind when you find that your parrot is biting you whenever you approach it. Here, we will let you in on a few of the secrets.

The first thing that you need to do regarding any pet that is behaving badly is to check the circumstances which led to the bad behaviour. When your parrot bites you check and think of what you were doing when it bit you. On observing a few times you will find a pattern and will be able to identify what actually led to this behaviour and then address it. It may have been that you were playing some game with them; they got excited and bit you. If this is the reason then maybe you should try some other game which will not excite them as much and therefore will keep you safe from biting. One other thing that you can do is change the mood of the game perhaps; either way you need to prevent your pet from getting excited.

Many times it so happens that the pet might actually be beaking on you i.e. rubbing its beak sideways along your hand and you pull your hand away suddenly. This sudden pulling away of hand is a vicious sign to your parrot and it retorts back by biting you. Donot pull away suddenly. If you have a problem with beaking then gently withdraw your limb without giving any wrong signals to the bird. Never do anything as silly as get angry on them or shout at them. Parrots are very sensitive birds and the situation can degrade for you with the parrot biting and screeching at the same time.

Donot let them perceive any sort of negative emotion or reaction to what they do. If the parrot has bitten you donot react violently; keep the anger within you and come away gently without making a fuss. Try detecting the cause of this behaviour and donot get nervous. Parrots being quite empathetic creatures tend to overreact in such situations.

Suppose you want them to play with you and they do not even get up when you say “up”, donot harass them into anger and provoke to bite you. Let them be by themselves, like human beings they too have mood swings and want some space. Give your parrot some space and it will stop behaving viciously with you. Most importantly treat your parrot as a friend and give them time and attention. Try and develop a certain level of communication with them and when your pet sees that you are actually good and they can trust you they will really stop biting you and become friends. So be patient with your parrot and gain their trust.
