How To Fix Bad Parrot Behaviour
Parrot behaviour is a menace to many households. A well managed parrot can be a joy to behold but sometimes a rogue parrot can cause trouble by biting, pooping and screaming. This is bad parrot behaviour and can be corrected with proper behaviour training.
You may think that your parrot is a wild creature and is too far gone for training. Any parrot, even a medium age wild parrot can be trained to proper behaviour. Parrots are intelligent creatures and will respond to the proper training.
The most important thing to remember is discipline. You may feel uncomfortable being stern with your parrot but a well trained parrot is a happy parrot.
When handling your parrot you must remain calm and have an authoritative yet smooth tone to your voice. Animals can sense fear and anger and will react to it. Take your time, make slow, calm re-assuring movements and speak in a level tone to get the best results.
Many parrot behaviour problems are down to a matter of trust. Your parrot may be lashing out because he is frightened. Your parrots trust needs to be earned first in order to successfully train them.
Get used to feeding your parrot by hand. If you feel uncomfortable, at first, then wear protective gloves. Find out what treats they like and do this regularly. When your parrot becomes accustomed to this remove the gloves when hand feeding.
Once your parrot is comfortable being hand fed you need to get them used to perching on you. Slowly move your hand to the parrots belly and say “Get UP” while applying a little pressure. Be patient, and repeat these words until the parrot understands and steps onto your hand. Make sure to reward the parrot with their favourite treat.
Repeat these exercises and you will be starting to gain your parrots trust and will be able to train them to cure their bad parrot behaviour.
